It's not just an update about what it's about; in general, yes, but it gets interesting when we start talking about the performance these new software versions will bring to users. Taking advantage of the star that it's the iPhone and squeezing all the possibilities out of the little things like the AirPods...
Let's begin with the latest operating system: VisionOS.
Now visionOS 2 lets you do something truly amazing with the photos you already have in your library. With just the press of a button, advanced machine learning gets a view for your left and right eye from your beautiful 2D image, creating a spatial photo with natural depth. And now you can enjoy all your panoramas and spatial photos and videos along with the people you love using SharePlay in the Photos app. People are amazed at how easy it is to navigate Vision Pro. Now you can easily raise your hand and tap to open the home view or flip your hand to see the time and battery level and tap again to open the Control Center. People love the Mac Virtual Display. Later this year it will be enhanced even further with higher resolution and screen size, and it can expand even more into an ultra-wide screen that wraps around you, equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side. With visionOS 2 we are adding train support to travel mode. And there is new immersive video content from Apple on the way. These titles and more will be available in the TV app.
Apple Vision Pro will be rolling out to these eight countries below starting with China, Japan, and Singapore on June 28 and Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the UK on July 12.
The hype generated by the use of iPhone... iOS 18
iOS 18 is a major update that offers more ways to personalize your iPhone, stay connected, and relive special moments. And now your app icons and widgets can add even more. Now you can continue enjoying the wallpaper when you unlock your iPhone because you can arrange apps and widgets to perfectly frame it. You can select them all and easily place them at the bottom just above the dock for easy access or even to the side. We have a stunning new look for app icons when we go into dark mode. We can open a new customization sheet and now I can tint them all with color. We're also bringing new levels of customization and capability to the Control Center. To add more controls, you can open the new control gallery where I have many options to choose from. You can adjust how my controls are arranged and change their size too. These new controls are also available from the lock screen so you can swap the camera and flashlight for different controls like taking a note when an idea strikes and you can even use the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro to invoke these new controls. So this year there's a new way to protect sensitive apps and the information within them by allowing you to lock an app. When you choose to lock an app if someone else tries to tap it they will be prompted to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode and the information within the app will not appear elsewhere in the system. There may also be times when you want to hide an app that you don't want others to know is installed on your device. Well, now you can hide it and put it in a new locked hidden apps folder. In iOS 18 you have control to decide which contacts an app can see. Also control when pairing accessories. This is a big year for tapbacks. Not only have we redesigned your favorites, now there are unlimited ways to express yourself allowing you to tap back with any emoji or sticker. Bringing one of your most requested features to messages. You can schedule your message to send later. You also have more ways to express your tone with bold, italic, underline, or strikethrough formatting for any text. "We're introducing a new way to amplify your messages with text effects visually." Some words and phrases automatically show a suggestion for you to quickly select and send. And you can also add one of the many new effects to any text. Now you can use the satellite capabilities on the iPhone 14 and later to connect to satellites hundreds of miles above Earth to send text messages to your friends and family when you're off the grid all from the Messages app. Once connected you'll be able to use key iMessage features like sending and receiving messages, emojis, and tapbacks. There's also support for satellite SMS messaging. This year a new way to stay in control and manage incoming emails with on-device categorization that organizes your messages and helps you stay on top of all your accounts like transactions for receipts and order confirmations, updates for newsletters and social media notifications, and promotions. Maps deliver new topographic maps with detailed trail networks and hiking routes including all 63 U.S. national parks that can be saved on your phone and accessed offline with step-by-step voice guidance and the ability to create your hiking routes. Introducing Tap to Cash, a quick and private way to exchange Apple Cash without sharing phone numbers or email addresses. With Tap to Cash, you can pay someone for dinner by bringing the phones close together. And event tickets have a beautiful new design and new features including a new event guide that combines helpful venue information with smart recommendations from your favorite Apple apps.
iOS 18 brings the biggest redesign of the Photos app to date. The app has been unified into a single view with the photo grid at the top and your library organized by theme below. This filter button allows you to quickly narrow down to specific types of content and now I can even filter screenshots to enjoy my photos without clutter. With collections, you can browse by themes like weather, people, my favorite memories, new ones like trips, and more. When you want to find a specific person in the library you use "People and Pets" and now it includes my favorite groups of people for the first time. If you swipe right from the grid you'll find the new carousel that highlights your best content in a beautiful poster-like view. The photos you've marked as favorites are here and also the featured photos the app shows. That's iOS 18.
AirPods
AirPods Updates This year making it even easier to interact with Siri. The ability has been created to simply nod your head to say yes or gently shake your head to say no. To ensure your voice is heard clearly and crisply no matter your environment they're bringing voice isolation to AirPods Pro. Expanding personalized spatial audio to include gaming so you're at the center of the action like never before.
Apple TV
The new Insight feature of Apple TV This year some updates have been introduced that make watching TV even more enjoyable. It's called InSight. When you're watching an original Apple show or movie just swipe down on the remote and InSight will show you the actors and their character names in real time. And if you're curious about the song playing you can quickly see the track and add it to an Apple Music playlist to enjoy later. InSight will also be available when you use your iPhone as a remote.
WatchOS 11
They will be introducing training load in watchOS 11, an insightful way to measure how the intensity and duration of your workouts are impacting your body over time. Using calorimetry data like heart rate, pace, and elevation, along with your personal data like age and weight, a powerful new algorithm automatically translates our sensor data into an estimate of your effort rating. After your workout, you can review the rating on the summary page which ranges from easy one to maximum effort ten and you can even adjust your effort rating up or down to get it just right. Your effort rating and workout duration are then used to calculate your training load. You'll be able to see if you're staying stable above your average and can progress and improve safely or when you're well above your average and need to pay close attention to avoid burnout or injury. And now it's even easier for everyone to get more insights from the fitness app on the iPhone by giving you the ability to customize the summary tab to show the information you want to see. Because the Apple Watch can track key metrics while you sleep like heart rate, respiratory rate, and resting temperature, it can give you deeper insights into your body. So with watchOS 11 these metrics are the foundation of the new insightful Vitals app where you can review your daily health status and explore your most important health metrics at a glance.
For additional information, your metrics are highlighted when they are outside your typical range with details on what has changed over the past week. And when multiple metrics are out of range you'll receive a notification with a personalized message to help you understand how these changes might be related to other aspects of your life like alcohol, elevation changes, or even illnesses. And last year the Smart Stack was introduced. This year it gets even smarter by automatically adding new widgets just when you need them like the precipitation widget to alert you before it rains or the translation widget for when you travel to a new place. The Smart Stack also becomes more capable with live activities arriving to the Apple Watch. So you'll have all the details for your favorite events. That's what's coming in watchOS 11.
Now let's talk about iPadOS.
Apps are fundamental to the iPad experience. In iPadOS 18 they are even better starting with a new floating tab bar. When you want to explore more the tab bar becomes the sidebar. If you use a specific tab often you can customize the tab bar. One of the best features of SharePlay is screen sharing. Now you can tap and draw on your screen to point out what they should do on theirs. And if you need to assist more directly you can request permission to control their iPad or iPhone remotely. Next, I want to talk about a feat some may have concluded must be a mathematical impossibility. That's right bringing the Calculator to the iPad.
To show you the new Math Notes experience. You access it simply by tapping the new Calculator button. And with my Apple Pencil, you can simply start writing expressions as you would on a sheet of paper. As soon as you write an equal sign the Calculator solves it immediately and shows you the result in a similar handwriting. When you make changes it appears as live updates.
And all of this also works as Notes. When you need to do calculations, Notes has all the new math capabilities of the Calculator. It uses a powerful on-device machine learning model to recreate your handwriting style from your notes, unlocking new capabilities. Just scribble your thoughts as quickly as you have them, and Smart Script refines your writing as you go. And that's iPadOS 18.
Welcome to macOS Sequoia
Welcome to macOS Sequoia. There is a new continuity feature called iPhone mirroring. With iPhone mirroring on Mac, you can see what's on your iPhone device and also control it, all while barely lifting a finger. I can see the customized wallpaper. The icons are right where they belong, and I can use the phone normally, like swiping through the pages of the home screen. They are implementing iPhone notifications to Mac. They appear alongside Mac notifications, and You can even interact with them when you don't have the iPhone handy. macOS Sequoia has fantastic updates on how to organize your windows. Now, when you drag a window to the edge of the screen, macOS automatically suggests a tiled position on your desktop. When you're at a video call, say goodbye to oversharing with the new presenter preview. It lets you see what you're about to share before you share it. Using a website, Safari can now help you discover more about the page with Highlights. Safari uses machine learning to automatically detect relevant information and highlight it as you browse. Summaries are also integrated into a redesigned Reader. Reader, instantly removes distractions from articles and can now provide a table of contents and include a helpful summary right next to the article, with a distraction-free experience to video on the web as well with Viewer. When Safari detects a video on the page, Viewer helps you bring it to the foreground while still giving you full access to system playback controls like Airplay and Picture in Picture. And the video moves automatically to Picture in Picture if you click away. macOS Sequoia, developer betas are available today. Public betas will be available next month, and all OS versions will be available to users this fall.
Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence will enable your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to understand and create language and images, and take action for you to simplify interactions across all your apps. For example, your iPhone can prioritize your notifications to minimize unnecessary distractions while ensuring you don't miss anything important. Apple Intelligence also powers new writing tools you can access system-wide to feel more confident in your writing. These tools can rewrite, correct, and summarize texts for you, and now you can create fully original images to make daily conversations even more delightful. So, when you wish a friend a happy birthday, you can create an image of them surrounded by cake, balloons, and flowers to make it more festive. You can create images in three unique styles: sketch, illustration, and animation. Besides Messages, this experience is integrated into system-wide apps like Notes, Freeform, Keynote, and Pages.
Another way Apple Intelligence has a profound impact is its ability to take action in your apps. So you can say things like, "Bring up the files Joz shared with me last week," or "Show me all the photos of Mom, Olivia, and me," or "Play the podcast my wife sent the other day."
There is one more critical element to personal intelligence, and that is understanding your context. Suppose one of my meetings has been rescheduled for later, and I'm wondering if it will prevent me from arriving on time to my daughter's play. Apple Intelligence can process relevant personal data to assist me. It can understand who my daughter is, the details of the play she sent several days ago, the time and place of my meeting, and the expected traffic between my office and the theater.
With Apple Intelligence, powerful intelligence goes hand in hand with powerful privacy. We've deeply integrated it into your iPhone, iPad, and Mac and across all your apps, so it's aware of your data without collecting it. When you make a request, Apple Intelligence analyzes if it can be processed on-device. If it needs greater computational capacity, it can turn to Private Cloud Computing and send only the data relevant to your task to be processed on servers with Apple Silicon. Your data is never stored or made accessible to Apple. It is used exclusively to fulfill your request. And just like your iPhone, independent experts can inspect the code running on these servers to verify this privacy promise.
There are other AI tools available that can be helpful for tasks that rely on broad world knowledge or offer specialized expertise in a domain. We aim to let you use these external models without having to jump between different tools, so we're integrating them directly into your experiences. And we're starting with the best of these: the pioneer and market leader, OpenAI's ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4. So Siri can leverage ChatGPT's expertise when it can be useful to you. You'll be able to access ChatGPT for free without creating an account. Your requests and information will not be logged. And for ChatGPT subscribers, you can connect your account and access paid features directly within our experiences.
ChatGPT integration will come to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. We also plan to add support for other AI models in the future.
Thank you very much for joining us at this short review.
